The government has aimed to procure and dispatch 1012 million tonnes (MT) of coal to consumer during the financial year 2023-24 (FY24). As on October 17, 2023, coal companies including Coal India (CIL), Singareni Collieries Company (SCCL) and Captive/ Commercial mines have cumulatively supplied 500 MT of coal. Dispatch of 500 MT of coal in 200 days, despite monsoon season, in first half of the year, is an outstanding achievement.

During last financial year, 500 MT coal dispatch milestone was achieved as on November 09, 2022. Thus, during the current year, 500 MT dispatch mark has been achieved 23 days in advance. During second half of the year, the rate of production and dispatch is normally higher than first half of the year. It is, therefore, expected that this year dispatch of coal would exceed one billion tonne mark.

Out of 500 MT of coal dispatched, 416.57 MT went to the power sector and 84.77 MT to the non-regulated sector. The growth of coal transport to power sector year to year is 7.27% and growth to non-regulated sector year to year is 38.02%. Last year as on March 31, 2023, 893.19 million tonnes of coal were dispatched.

The coal sector has witnessed an unprecedented upswing, with production, dispatch and stock levels soaring to remarkable heights. This exceptional growth is attributed to the unwavering dedication of Coal PSUs, which has played a pivotal role in driving this extraordinary progress. This underscores the efficiency of the coal supply chain, ensuring the seamless distribution of coal nationwide. The Ministry of Coal remains committed to maintain consistent coal production and dispatch, ensuring an uninterrupted supply for a reliable and resilient energy sector contributing the nation’s continued growth and prosperity.
