RS biennial elections for 56 seats on February 27

The Election Commission of India today announced that elections for 56 Rajya Sabha (RS) seats from 15 states will be held on February 27. The commission informed that 50 members will retire on April 2, while six members will retire on April 3.

Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, BJP president JP Nadda, and Samajwadi Party MP, actor Jaya Bachchan are among the MPs whose terms are ending. The states going to the RS polls are: Uttar Pradesh (10 seats), Maharashtra and Bihar (six each), Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal (five each), Gujarat and Karnataka (four each), Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha and Rajasthan (three each), Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand (one seat each).

Nominations for the elections will be open from February 8 to February 15. The last date for the withdrawal of candidature is February 20. The polling shall be held on February 27, from 9 am to 4 pm, followed by the counting of votes and the election process shall be completed by February 29.
