Allahabad HC cancels acquisition of 170 hectares of land by UP government

The Allahabad High Court (HC) has cancelled the acquisition of 170 hectares of land in Gulistanpur village of Gautam Budh Nagar in Greater Noida. This is the third time in this month that the HC has cancelled the land acquisition made by the UP government by invoking the urgency clause. This clause empowers the government to acquire land for public purposes without inviting objections from farmers. Earlier on May 12 and 14 also, the court had scrapped the UP government's acquisition in Saberi and Surakpur villages of Gautam Budh Nagar district.

Meanwhile, land acquisition was made in February 2008, and 656 farmers were promised Rs 132 crore. However, some affected farmers had petitioned the HC in March 2008, challenging the urgency clause for acquiring their land. Further, the acquisition was cancelled after the Greater Noida Authority failed to prove that any industrial work had begun on the land.

Apart from the Greater Noida villages, the issue of land acquisition has also seen violent protests in West Bengal's Nandigram and Singur in 2007 and 2008 respectively. And it even led to Left Front's poll debacle in the recently held Assembly elections.
