Tripura CM Manik Saha wins, Nagaland gets its first woman MLA

Tripura Chief Minister (CM) Manik Saha was re-elected from the Town Bordowali seat for the second time after defeating his nearest rival Asish Kumar Saha of Congress by 1,257 votes.

Manik Saha was first elected to the state Assembly in the bypoll held in June last year by defeating Ashish Kumar Saha with a margin of 6,104 votes. Saha was appointment as the CM in last year's May 15 after Biplab Kumar Deb was ousted as Tripura CM. He was also the state unit chief of the BJP and RS member for a brief period. As per the BJP sources, Manik Saha is likely to be the CM of the second BJP government. Besides Saha, Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath (from Mohanpur seat), Pranajit Singha Roy (from Radhakishorepur seat), Food and Civil Supplies Minister Manoj Kanti Deb (from Kamalpur seat), Tripura Assembly Deputy Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen (from Dharmanagar seat) have also been re-elected to the state Assembly.

While, Hekani Jakhalu of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) made history by becoming the first woman to be elected to the 60-member Nagaland Assembly. She defeated sitting MLA Azheto Zhimomi of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) by 1,536 votes. She was one of four women among 183 candidates in this election. Nagaland got its first-ever woman MLA today, after 60 years since it attained statehood.
