Parliament adjourned till Monday amid uproar

The proceedings of Lok Sabha (LS) and Rajya Sabha (RS) were adjourned for the day following the uproar by Opposition and ruling party members.

In the RS, when the House met this morning, the Opposition members demanded discussion and a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) probe into the Adani issue while, BJP members demanded an apology from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his ‘democracy under threat’ remarks made in London recently. Soon after the listing of papers, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar disallowed the adjournment notices given by the opposition party members over the Adani Group matter. Afterwards, Members of the Congress along other opposition party MPs created uproar in the house when the Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge disallowed to speak. The treasury bench members also started protest.

Taking up the point of order by Kharge, the chairman directed Leader of the House Piyush Goyal to authenticate the assertions made on March 13 and 14. ‘With respect to the point of order raised by the Leader Of Opposition, I find it expedient to direct the leader of the House to authenticate the assertions made by him on March 13 and 14 on the issue during the course of the day,’ Dhankhar said. As the noisy scene prevailed, the House was adjourned for the day. RS has not transacted any business since the second part of the Budget session began on Monday due to uproarious scenes in the House.

LS also adjourned for the day amid slogan shouting by members of opposition, treasury benches over Rahul Gandhi's democracy remarks.
