Several opposition members today said Prime Minister Narendra (PM) Modi-led government’s refusal to allow the opposition to raise its demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) into the Adani issue was to be blamed for the impasse in Parliament.
The opposition parties - including the Congress, DMK, RJD, CPI-M, CPI, NCP, JDU, AAP, and Shiv Sena, met at the Rajya Sabha leader of the opposition and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge's chamber in the morning. In the meeting, they coordinated their strategy on the demand for a JPC into the Adani issue. Late, they addressed the media after the first adjournment of both houses.
Congress leader Pramod Tiwari accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of using government agencies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Income Tax (IT) to spread terror. He said that a detailed investigation into the Adani issue might implicate the ruling party personally in the Adani group’s wrongdoings which is why it was not agreeing to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe. He further mentioned that the Adani issue is being raised in the Parliament not for their benefit, but for the ‘public interest’ and the service of the nation. Tiwari also slammed the manner in which police illegally gathered at the residence of Rahul Gandhi on Sunday. Ram Gopal Yadav of the Samajwadi Party said if a JPC probe is held then the real culprits will come out and the BJP will stand ‘exposed’. BRS leader K Keshava Rao said that they are not satisfied with the Supreme Court probe and want a JPC probe. ‘It is a political scam. This is not a simple scandal or a scam, it is more than that. It is going to affect the economy and people's money’, he added. Elamaram Kareem of the CPI(M) said the PM and home minister are ‘afraid’ of holding a discussion in Parliament and are not agreeing to their demand.
The opposition has been demanding a JPC into the Adani issue and has been stalling Parliament over their demand.
