Karnataka: Congress MLA UT Khader unanimously elected as new speaker of state Assembly

Former Minister and five-time Congress MLA UT Khader was unanimously elected as the new Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly today. His election also marks the first time a Muslim leader will be serving as the Speaker of Karnataka Assembly. Khader is an MLA from Mangaluru Assembly segment. 

Khader is the 23rd Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah proposed the name of Khader, which was seconded by Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar. As there was no other contender for the Speaker’s post, Protem Speaker RV Deshpande put the proposal made by the CM to vote, and it was unanimously adopted by the House. Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar will leave for New Delhi this evening, where they are expected to meet the Congress high command and discuss cabinet expansion, and allocation of portfolios to existing Ministers.
