Just a day before the much-awaited grand Opposition leaders' meeting, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati today announced that her party will not be attending the meeting of Opposition party leaders in Patna tomorrow and clarified her stance against an opposition alliance.

Mayawati said that the opposition raising issues jointly ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha election and the Patna meeting organized by Nitish Kumar tomorrow ‘was more like joining hands, not hearts.’ BSP chief, said ‘In a country suffering from inflation, poverty, unemployment, backwardness, illiteracy, ethnic hatred, religious frenzy/violence etc., it is clear from the stricken condition of Bahujans that the parties like Congress and BJP are not capable of properly implementing the humanistic egalitarian constitution of Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar’. She said that before such a meeting, ‘it would have been much better if these parties would have clarified their intentions a little more to instill confidence in the public’.

Meanwhile, Bihar leaders said that Mayawati's BSP and two other parties - Naveen Patnaik's BJD and K Chandrasekhar Rao's Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) - were not invited for the meeting. These parties have been traditionally equidistant from both the BJP and Congress, though they have often extended issue-based support to the BJP.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, party leader Rahul Gandhi, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Delhi CM and AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal, Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren, Samajwadi Party supremo Akhilesh Yadav, Maharashtra's former chief minister Uddhav Thackeray and NCP president Sharad Pawar are among the leaders expected to attend the first high-level opposition meeting conducted by Bihar CM  Nitish Kumar, in an attempt to stitch a grand alliance against BJP ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha election.
