External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar filed his nomination papers today for the upcoming Rajya Sabha (RS) elections from Gujarat in Gandhinagar.
S Jaishankar was accompanied by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and BJP Gujarat unit president C R Paatil while submitting the nomination papers to Returning Officer Rita Mehta in the state Assembly complex. After filing his nomination Jaishankar expressed his gratitude to PM Modi, BJP leadership and people and MLAs of Gujarat. The term of three BJP RS members including S Jaishankar, Jugalji Thakor and Dinesh Anavadiya will end on August 18. Polls will be held for these three seats. Jaishankar was elected to the RS from Gujarat in 2019, when he was inducted to the Union Cabinet.
On Friday, the Congress said it would not field candidates for polls to the three RS seats from Gujarat as it did not have enough MLAs in the 182-member state Assembly. The last date for filing nominations is July 13 and the date for withdrawal of the nominations is July 17. Polling will be held on July 24 if required.
