Former Chhattisgarh Congress president Mohan Markam sworn in as state minister

Former Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Mohan Markam today was sworn-in as a minister in the Bhupesh Baghel-led cabinet. Two days before he was replaced as the Congress party's Chhattisgarh unit president and appointed MP Deepak Baij, the party's Lok Sabha member from Bastar, as the party's Chhattisgarh unit chief replacing Markam. 

Governor Biswabhusan Harichandan administered the oath of office and secrecy to Markam during a swearing-in ceremony at Raj Bhawan in Raipur. Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel was present on the occasion. A Cabinet reshuffle in Chhattisgarh was expected after the state School Education Minister Premsai Singh Tekam resigned from the Cabinet on Thursday. Markam is yet to be assigned a portfolio.

Markam, who represents the Kondagaon assembly seat, is a prominent tribal face of the grand old party in Bastar region-south Chhattisgarh. A two-time MLA, Markam had been leading the Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee since June 2019. After the oath taking ceremony, Mohan Markam said ‘After serving as the state Congress president for four years, I will do everything to deliver my best with the new responsibility bestowed on me as a minister in the Chhattisgarh government. I extend my gratitude to the party high command and the chief minister’.
