Jagdeep Dhankhar reconstitutes RS panel of vice-chairpersons, half of them women

The Chairman of Rajya Sabha (RS), Jagdeep Dhankhar today reconstituted the panel of vice-chairpersons of Parliament's upper house with half of them being women. 

The Chairman made the announcement in the Upper House on the first day of the Monsoon Session. The panel reconstituted contains a total of eight names and it comprise four outstanding women Parliamentarians, all of whom are serving in this capacity for the first time. New vice-chairpersons are P T Usha, S Phangnon Konyak, Fauzia Khan, Sulata Deo, V Vijaysai Reddy, Ghanshyam Tiwari, L Hanumanthaiah and Sukhendu Sekhar Ray. The vice chairpersons are eligible to preside over the house in the absence of the chairman or the deputy chairman. Jagdeep Dhankhar announced that the panel of vice chairpersons has been reconstituted with effect from July 17, 2023. 

This is the first time in the history of the Upper House that equal representation has been given to women members in the panel of Vice-Chairpersons. The move is a significant stride towards gender equality in Indian politics. By providing first-time women members this opportunity, the Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar has paved the way for a more representative and progressive democracy. 

The Monsoon Session of Parliament began on July 20 and continue till August 11. A total of 17 sittings are scheduled to be held in this session.
