Election Commission announces dates for assembly elections in 5 states

The Election Commission of India (ECI) today announced the dates for upcoming assembly elections in five states, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, and Mizoram.

The five states will go to polls on different days from November 7 to November 30, 2023. The Madhya Pradesh assembly elections will be held in a single phase on November 17, 2023, while elections in Rajasthan will be held on November 23, 2023. Elections in Telangana and Mizoram will be held in one phase on November 30, 2023 and November 7, 2023, respectively. The voting in Chhattisgarh will be conducted in two phases on November 7 and November 17, 2023. The counting of votes for these state assembly elections will take place on 3rd December. Speaking at press conference, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar said strong measures are being put in place to make these polls inducement-free. He said nearly 16 crore voters would be eligible to cast their votes in these elections. These five states will have 1.77 lakh polling stations, of which 1.01 lakh will have webcasting facility. More than 8,000 polling stations will be managed by women, he added.

The Congress is in power in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh is ruled by BJP, Telangana by Bharat Rashtra Samithi and Mizoram by Mizo National Front (MNF). The term of legislative assemblies of Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Mizoram and Rajasthan end in December-January. The upcoming state polls are being considered as a semi-final before the 2024 assembly elections.
