The Lok Sabha (LS) today expelled Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra as Member of Parliament for 'unethical conduct' in 'cash for Parliament Questions'.

The Ethics Committee report in the 'cash for query' case against TMC MP Mahua Moitra has been presented in the LS. The committee recommended that Moitra ‘may be expelled’ from the Lok Sabha and had called for an ‘intense, legal, institutional inquiry’ by the central government in a ‘time-bound manner’. The report said that Mahua Moitra has committed 'unethical conduct' and 'contempt of the House' by sharing the LS login credentials i.e. the user ID and password of the LS 'Member Portal' with an unauthorized person.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi moved a motion to expel the Trinamool member for ‘unethical conduct’, which was adopted by a voice vote. Opposition members walked out of the House as the LS Speaker started the voting process on the motion moved by Joshi. The opposition has created a huge uproar on this issue. MPs from opposition parties including Congress raised loud slogans during this period and says Mahua has been deliberately targeted. The LS was adjourned for the day soon after Moitra was expelled.

Moitra after her expulsion said, ‘If this Modi government thought that by shutting me up, they could do away with the Adani issue, let me tell you this that this kangaroo court has only shown to all of India that the haste and the abuse of due process you have used demonstrates how important Adani is to you. And to what length you will go to harass a single woman MP into shutting her into submission.’
