Lok Sabha Elections 2024: BJP to go solo in Punjab, no alliance with SAD

26 Mar 2024 Evaluate

Punjab BJP Chief Sunil Jakhar announced that the party will not go into an alliance with Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in Punjab for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Sunil Jakhar said that the decision was taken on the basis of the opinion of the people and party workers in Punjab. Jakhar said the move will benefit all sections of the society in Punjab. He further said that the works done by the BJP under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi are not hidden from anyone, noting that the farmers’ produce was procure at minimum support price (MSP) in the last 10 years.

The development comes almost a week after senior BJP leader and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, when asked about the possibility of a tie-up with the SAD, had said, ‘Negotiations are on. We want all NDA parties to come together.’ SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal previously rejected forming an alliance with the BJP, but did not entirely dismiss the possibility of a future partnership. The Shiromani Akali Dal had walked out of the BJP-led NDA alliance in September 2020 over the now-repealed farm laws. In 2019, the BJP and the SAD won two seats each in Punjab.

Polling for the 13 Lok Sabha seats in Punjab will take place on June 1, which is the last phase of the seven-phase general elections and the results will be announced on June 4.
