The Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell, under Ministry of Petroleum & Na oleum & Na oleum & Natural Gas, in its latest data has showed that crude oil imports of India rose 6.16 per cent to 43.1 million tonnes in first two months (April-May) of the current fiscal 2024-25 (FY25) over 40.6 million tonnes in corresponding period of FY24. In value terms, it jumped 21.40 per cent to $26.1 billion in period under review of 2024-25 as compared to $21.5 billion in the same period of 2023-24.
The rise in imports is due to the demand for petroleum products continue to grow amid stagnant domestic production. In May 2024, the country imported 21.8 million tonnes of crude oil, up 5.83% from May 2023. The country’s crude import bill also registered an increase of 21.4% to $26.1 billion in Apr-May period compared to the year-ago period.
The net import bill for Oil & Gas for May 2024 increased to $12.4 billion as compared to net import bill for Oil & Gas of $10.8 billion for May 2023. Out of which, crude oil imports constitutes $13.2 billion, LNG imports $1.1 billion and the exports were $3.8 billion during May 2024.
