India’s total cotton production during 2023-24 cotton season (October-September) is estimated at 325.22 lakh bales of 170 kg each, lower 3.38% as compared to production of 336.60 lakh bales of 170 kg each in 2022-23 season. The production in 2023-24 season is likely to be impacted by majorly lower production estimates from South Zone (Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu).
The total supply of cotton is estimated at 398.38 lakh bales of 170 kg each in current season, higher from 390.68 lakh bales of 170 kg each in 2022-23 season. The total consumption by Non-MSME is likely to be 204.00 lakh bales of 170 kg each, by MSME is expected to be 103.00 lakh bales of 170 kg each and consumption from Non Textile industry is estimated at 16.00 lakh bales of 170 kg each.
The cotton exports are likely to be 28.00 lakh bales of 170 kg each and imports 12 lakh bales of 170 kg each during 2023-24 season. The closing stock may decrease to 47.38 lakh bales of 170 kg each from 61.16 lakh bales of 170 kg each last year. In 2023-24 season, cotton area is projected at 126.80 lakh hectares lower as compared to 129.27 lakh hectares in last cotton season.
