92-days Manipur blockade released partially; Govt accords Kuki’s demand

01 Nov 2011 Evaluate

The 92-days economic blockade in the state of Manipur has been called-off by Sadar Hills District Demand Committee (SHDDC) post written assurance from the state government around midnight in capital Imphal. SHDDC’s demand for conversion of Kuki tribal majority Sadar Hills area into a full fledged district has been accorded by government.

On August 01, 2011, the economic blockade was launched by SHDDC - Kuki tribal group blocking two national highways - Imphal-Dimapur-Guwahati (NH 39) and Imphal-Jiribam-Silchar (NH53). However, on the same day, the United Naga Council (UNC) had launched counter-blockade opposing SHDDC’s demand.

On state government agreeing the Kuki tribal group’s demand, they have released the blockade from said two national highways, however, they are yet to hear from UNC.

This blockade had cut-off the north-eastern from rest of the country which lead to rise in prices of daily utilities. People had no option but to buy essential goods and services from black market. A cooking gas cylinder was sold at the black market for as high as Rs 2,000, while a litre of petrol sold at Rs 200.
