The Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar announced that the Assembly Elections in the state of Jammu and Kashmir will be held in three phases on September 18, September 25, and October 1, 2024. The counting of votes will be done on October 4. While, in Haryana, all the 90 assembly seats will be contested in a single phase on October 1 and the results will be out on October 4.
Addressing the press conference, Rajiv Kumar said, ‘In Jammu and Kashmir, there are total 90 Assembly constituencies of which 74 are general, ST are nine and SC constituencies are seven. Talking about the elector’s data, total 87.09 lakh electors are there is Jammu and Kashmir, 44.46 lakh male voters and 42.62 lakhs female voters are there. The ECI added that the people of J&K ‘chose ballots over bullets’. On the Jammu-Kashmir elections, Mr Kumar noted that all the political parties sought immediate polling in the state. This is the first election in the newly drawn UT of J-K after the abolition of Article 370. In December last year, the Supreme Court had directed the Centre to conclude the election process in the Union territory by September 30, 2024.
The notification for the polls in Haryana will be issued on September 5, and the last date of filing the nominations will be September 12. Haryana has 2.01 crore electors, comprising 1.06 crore male voters and 95 lakh female voters. The legislative assemblies of Haryana are set to complete on November 3. Maharashtra and Jharkhand are the other States that will go to polls this year.
