India’s crude steel production surged 3.55% to 85.40 million tonne during April - October 2024 as compared to 82.47 million tonne during April - October 2023. Further, India’s crude steel production is projected at 255 million tonne by 2030-31.
While, finished steel production stood at 82.81 million tonne during April - October 2024 period as compared to 79.13 million tonne during April - October 2023, i.e. up by 4.65%. Finished steel consumption stood at 85.70 million tonne in April - October 2024 period. Meanwhile, India’s Finished steel production is projected at 230 million tonne by 2030-31.
Steel Quality Control Orders enables consumption of only such steel products in domestic market that have been produced or imported under the BIS license, wherever applicable. Enhancing the scope of QCOs is an ongoing process. As on date, 151 Indian Standards are notified under the Quality Control Order covering carbon steel, alloy steel and stainless steel. No impact assessments have been conducted on the impact of the QCOs on domestic steel quality and international competitiveness.
