In a bid to oppose government’s move to install Global Positioning System (GPS) devices in auto-rickshaws, auto-rickshaw drivers in Delhi have gone on an indefinite strike starting today. The auto-rickshaw unions are demanding that the cost of the device should be reduced and annual rentals also should be waived off. The cost of the device was earlier estimated at Rs 15,000, but after negotiations it was slashed to Rs 7,500. The auto unions, however, are saying that the prices are still high.

The unions which have decided to go on strike include Bharatiya Tipaya Chalak Sangh and Nyay Path Auto Drivers Welfare Association. The daily commuters will have to face difficulty because of this strike.

The government decided to fit the auto-rickshaws with the GPS device as it will enable two-way communication system that will help in checking speeding, route deviations and ensure safety of the commuters.
