NSDC join hands with industry body for talent search

The National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) is a first-of-its-kind Public Private Partnership (PPP) in India set up to facilitate the development and upgrading of the skills of the growing Indian workforce through skill training programs. NSDC is a non-profit company set up by the Ministry of Finance, under Section 25 of the Companies Act 1956. In its recent development, NSDC has joined hands with industry bodies like NASSCOM, CII, FICCI, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Gems & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) and YLG Salon & Spa for the nationwide hunt for skilled and talented youth who will get the opportunity to represent the country at WorldSkills Competition 2011 to be held in London.

In the 41st WorldSkills Competition - London, India is going to participate in 16 disciplines to be held from October 05 to 08, 2011. Car painting, plumbing and heating, wall and floor tiling, mould making, electronics, CNC turning, mechatronics, polymechanics/automation, web design, it software solutions, fashion technology, jewellery design, cooking, confectionery, beauty therapy and hair styling are the 16 disciplines under which a talented individual will be selected. The process of selections would start next week and would be completed by the middle of June. The chosen candidates would then be undergoing intensive coaching under experts drawn from the particular field so that they are in peak readiness at the time of the competition.

WorldSkills competition which is widely regarded as Skills Olympics takes place in a different country every two years and brings together over 1,000 young people, below 22 years of age, from across the world to compete in a variety of skills ranging from welding to web designing. In 2009, N Priyadarshan from Gee Dee Technical Institute, Coimbatore, won a silver medal from among 900 competitors representing 51 countries at the last WorldSkills Competition held at Calgary.

WorldSkills International is a not for profit membership association open to agencies or bodies which have a responsibility for promoting vocational education and training in their respective countries/regions. It provides a unique means of exchange and comparison of world-class competency standards in the industrial trades and service sectors of the global economy.
