14 Dec 2010 Evaluate

NTPC plans to set up two more power stations in Bengal, at Katwa and Bandel, with a total capacity of 2,980 MW. The company's presence in the State has so far been restricted to the 1,600 MW Farakka thermal power station, currently being expanded to 2,100 MW. The proposed units will also introduce the super critical generation technologies of 660 MW and 800 MW in the State.

NTPC had already entered into a power purchase agreement (PPA) with the State government for the proposed 2 X 800 MW coal-based thermal power station at Katwa in Burdwan district. The Katwal power station will require a total investment of Rs 9,600 crore. The project will require 1,100 acres of land, of which the State government has already completed acquisition of approximately 400 acres.
