Diversified conglomerate ITC is mulling the purchase of the paper and pulp business of B K Birla-promoted Century Textiles and has also completed the due diligence for Century's Nainital paper unit as mentioned in some media reports. The deal, if goes through, is expected to be valued at over Rs 3,000 crore. While, with this the company’s paperboard capacity will touch 7 lakh tonne per annum from the existing capacity of 5.5 lakh tone.
Century Textile operates its paper and pulp plant in Nainital, Uttarakhand. It has a capacity of 2 lakh tonne per annum, manufacturing writing and printing paper and rayon grade pulp. Also, it has recently set up a paper board unit with a capacity of 500 tonne per day for Rs 1,600 crore.
ITC in 2003 had acquired paperboard unit of Ballarpur Industries (BILT) for Rs 233 crore, which was the last major acquisition of the company in paperboard space. Recently, the Company has posted a net profit of Rs 4987.61 crore for the year ended March 31, 2011, up by 22.82% as compared to Rs 4061.00 crore in the last year. Total Income has increased by 17.15% to Rs 21986.42 crore for the year from Rs 18767.93 crore in last year.
