Container Corporation of India (CONCOR) is planning to start container train services from the inland container depot, which handles both export and import cargoes at a competitive tariff to Karaikal port and Delhi. It is ready to manage service from Tondiarpet in Chennai to Karaikal and from Madurai to Karaikal and Delhi.
As Karaikal Port is centrally located, goods can be imported and exported from there at a cheaper cost and containers are being sent to Colombo on a large-scale and a separate handling facility has been set up for goods sent from the Karaikal Port, which saves time.
Koodal Nagar inland container deports will become the main point for five districts, including Madurai, Dindigul, Karur, Theni and Namakkal. CONCOR also plans to set up an air-cargo complex as Madurai Airport set to soon operate international flight. CONCOR has handled 2.06 lakh TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of cargo in the current fiscal up to November, compared to 1.65 lakh TEUs in 2010-11.
Container Corporation of India is engaged in the business of transportation through containerization and it is the market leader having the largest network of 59 ICDs/CFSs in India.
