Maruti Suzuki India is finally taking cognizance of the existence of its SUVs and multi utility vehicles. It has decided to include such vehicles (called B segment) in the calculation of overall market share. Till now, Maruti was giving out market share figures based on just passenger cars and vans.
The fresh calculation takes away almost seven percentage points from the company’s market share. Maruti’s passenger vehicle market share has dropped to 44.3%, from 51.8% as per the previous calculation. It sells only the Grand Vitara in the B segment.
The reason of the changes may be Maruti wanted to align itself with global market-share calculation methods amid the growing weightage of utility vehicles in the overall passenger vehicle market. It has already unveiled the R III concept at the 2010 Delhi Motor Show and will eventually launch this vehicle in the Indian market. So, perhaps the corrective market-share calculation is a step towards this direction.
