Mahindra & Mahindra to set up tractor unit in south India by 2013

26 Aug 2010 Evaluate

M&M is looking at setting up a greenfield tractor manufacturing unit in South India, possibly Tamil Nadu, with a potential to build one lakh units annually. The facility should come onstream by 2013 and would be funded within the `4,500 crore overall capex investment, which M&M has already announced earlier.

M&M is already the world’s number one tractor maker by volume and is eyeing global expansion through its presence in two of the largest markets — China and the US. In India, it makes and sells the full range of tractors from 15 -75 horse power (hp) under two brands — Mahindra and Swaraj. But in keeping with the overall market growth, capacity expansion has become necessary. This facility may be operational in fiscal 2013. The new facility could see production of tractors between 30 hp and 50 hp categories. With a good monsoon and a strong rural liquidity, M&M expects tractor volume to grow 20% this fiscal. It recorded a 40% volume growth at 1.55 lakh units last year.
