Neyveli Lignite Corporation wants to put up a 1,980 MW (3 units of 660 MW each) power plant in Tamil Nadu. If it comes up, it will be NLC's first supercritical thermal power plant project. The project would probably come up near the port city of Karaikal.

The Tamil Nadu plant is among the several new projects that the public sector integrated power company is planning to put up. Another notable project is a 2,000 MW project, near Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. This project would be a joint venture with Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd, the generation arm of the state's electricity board.

NLC is also exploring the feasibility of taking part in the Ultra Mega Power Project that could possibly come up at Cheyyur, in Tamil Nadu as and when notified by the government of India. NLC had announced a year ago its intention to put up a 50 MW wind power project. Mr The first windmill would be erected in October, and the entire 50 MW plant would be in place before the end of the current financial year. NLC has also announced a foray into solar power. On the anvil is a plan to put up a 25 MW solar power unit.crackcrack
