GAIL (India), this year, has helped 51 underprivileged students to make it through the IIT/JEE, ISRO, UPTU and AIEEE entrance examinations. Out of 51 students, 12 crack IIT, 3 qualify for the ISRO, 10 qualify for AIEEE and 26 qualify for UPTU. These 51 students are the heart-warming success results of GAIL’s special CSR programme -- GAIL UTKARSH -- being run at Kanpur. Under this programme, 60 students from the economically backward sections were provided free board, lodge. Training and expert coaching for 10 months under the mentorship of Shri Abhayanand for the IIT/JEE entrance exams etc.

The company’s Utkarsh programme is unique in many ways. It is conducted under the mentorship of Abayanand, and only students belonging to families with an annual income of less than Rs 1.25 lakh are eligible for a place in the programme. Apart from this, it is possibly the only programme which has allocated 50 per cent of the available seats under its programme for SC/ST/OBC and physically handicapped students.

GAIL had started this programme as part of its Educational programmes under the CSR umbrella. Last year 3 students had entered the IIT, and 14 others had qualified for the NIT(8) and other institutions.
