Bajaj Auto to phase out XCD, focus on commuter segment

15 Jan 2010 Evaluate

Bajaj Auto Limited (BAL) will gradually phase out its 135 cc XCD DTS-Si, as it was doing a very small number (few hundreds) in the market. Going ahead, BAL will aggressively differentiate its motorcycle offerings under commuter and sports segments. This comes at a time when BAL has renewed its focus on entry-level products that cater to the rural market. The company sells Pulsar, Discover, Platina and Avenger brand of motorcycles. It also sells Kawasaki Ninja 250R in India.

It is looking at products at same price point under different segments. Further, its dealerships will have two separate counters dealing in commuter and sports motorcycles. The rural market needs products at a price point of Rs 35,000. Discover 100 cc is being accepted well in the market. It would be ending this financial year (FY'10) with total sales of 2.8 million units, which it expects to touch 3.6 million in FY11.

The company plans to shift majority of its production to the Pantnagar plant in Uttarakhand because of the low-tax regime prevalent there. On exports side, Bajaj is looking at expanding its presence in the African and Chinese markets. It hopes to unlock newer markets like Brazil in another two-and-a-half years.
