Chennai Metro Rail Ltd has awarded to Larsen & Toubro Ltd two tenders for constructing elevated viaducts. The tenders are for the design and construction of elevated viaduct (excluding stations) from Ashok Nagar to St. Thomas Mount at a total cost of Rs 141.1 crore and another for the stretch of the elevated viaduct (excluding stations) from Saidapet to Officers Training Academy at a total cost of Rs 173.3 crore.

 

These are part of the 46.5 km metro rail project being implemented in Chennai at a total cost of Rs 14,600 crore by Chennai Metro Rail. The project, being taken up in stages, will link North Chennai, Thirumangalam to the west and Kathipara junction to the south through Poonamallee High Road, Inner Ring Road and Mount Road. Over 20 km of lines would be below the ground level and the rest elevated.

 

The first tender awarded last February was to Hyderabad-based Soma Enterprise Ltd for Rs 199 crore marking the start of the work on the project. Soma Enterprise will set up a 4.5 km stretch of the elevated viaduct running between Koyambedu and Ashok Nagar.
