National Aluminium Co Ltd (NALCO) has received government approval for a bauxite mining lease in Andhra Pradesh, and will invest 60 billion rupees ($1.2 billion) to build an alumina refinery there. It would build a 1.4 million tonne alumina refinery in the Visakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh. The company said the new mines are estimated to have bauxite reserves of 85 million tonnes. The refinery is expected to be commissioned by 2013/14.

NALCO has a 1.6 million tonne alumina refinery in Orissa, and it has put on hold its plan to expand its capacity to 2.1 million tonnes.  The alumina produced in Andhra Pradesh would be turned into aluminium products at NALCO's existing smelter, and some of it may be exported as well. This expansion would help serve expected growing demand for aluminium in India. NALCO's director of production said earlier last week that India's demand for aluminium this year would be rise 4-5 percent in the 2009/10 year (April-March), up from growth of 3 percent in 2008-09.
