08 Jun 2009 Evaluate

Engineering major Siemens Ltd plans to set up a new facility for industrial products in Aurangabad this year. Though the company did not disclose which product under the industrial segment the company will roll out from Aurangabad, it will offer a product for the transportation sector.

The subsidiary of Germany-based Siemens AG inaugurated a gas insulated switchgear (GIS) factory in the city on Friday, making it the first company to start manufacturing GIS in India. With the opening of this GIS factory, the company has established its presence in the entire value chain of the energy segment.

In India Siemens is present in the energy, industry and healthcare segments. Siemens GIS factory has a capacity of manufacturing 400 units of switchgear with voltage ranges of 72.5kV, 145kV and 245kV.

The company's main competitors in this field are companies such as Areva, ABB and Toshiba. While Areva imports and assembles GIS, others are strictly into importing and selling. The Aurangabad unit gives Siemens a substantial edge over rivals and, by next year, it plans to garner a substantial marketshare.
