Wagon manufacturing firms – Texmaco and Titagarh Wagons – are likely to bag orders from Indian Railways for supplying 2,408 and 1,553 wagons respectively. The Railways is in the process of finalising wagon contracts for the current fiscal of about 11,187 wagons – which will be distributed amongst the public and private sector firms.
The value of these orders (11,187 wagons) is about Rs 1,617 crore, according to sources. This amount excludes the cost of steel sheets, which Indian Railways procures and supplies to wagon makers.
Other private sector companies that have bagged the orders are Modern Industries (1,733 wagons), Besco (1,357 wagons), Jessop (1,205 wagons) and HEI (786 wagons). The public sector wagon makers – Bharat Bhari Udyog Nigam Ltd (BBUNL) and its subsidiaries like Bharat Wagon – have bagged 2,145 wagons.
The current order of 11,187 wagons is against the Railways’ stated target of procuring 20,000 wagons in the current fiscal. Till December 2008, Railways had received deliveries of about 6,440 wagons, which were the supplies of orders placed in 2007-08 and previous fiscals. In the last three years, the Railways has ordered in the range of 10,000 wagons every financial year. crackcrack
