Ashok Leyland and Tata Motors to benefit from TN government’s plans to buy 3500 buses

18 Feb 2009 Evaluate

Currently, Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) funds are made available to states for purchase of buses for their urban transport system till 30th Jun ’09.  In the Interim Union Budget 2009-10, the government has increased the total allocation of Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNRUM) to Rs 11,842 crore for the year 2009-10.  This represents healthy 72% increase from Rs 6,866 crore of Budgeted estimates for FY 2008-09.

States are apparently ready to use this opportunity.  This was evident from the fact that the Tamil Nadu State Budget 2009-10 has provided for buying 3,500 new buses in FY 2009-10. This should primarily benefit Ashok Leyland and Tata Motors, who are the major listed players in the bus segment in India.
