Coal Ministry suggests cancelling linkages for 2 NTPC projects

04 Dec 2008 Evaluate

The Coal Ministry has suggested scrapping linkages for two of the projects of India's leading power producer NTPC, saying the proposed units are unlikely to come up in the 11th Five Year Plan (2007-12). The Standing Linkage Committee (SLC) on power, which met in late October, recommended cancelling existing linkages to NTPC's 2,000 MW North Karanpura STPS (super thermal power station) in Jharkhand and 500 MW 2nd unit of Mauda thermal power station in Maharashtra. The committee has also asked the project developers to take the Letter of Assurance (for coal linkages) as and when cases of 12th Plan projects are taken up. The Central Electricity Authority had informed the committee that the two stated projects of NTPC would not come up during the 11th Plan period.

For coal-based power generation capacity of 58,000 MW in the 11th plan, the Coal Ministry has provided linkages for projects of about 56,000 MW. However, over and above this 58,000 MW, the Power Ministry has sought linkages for an additional 24,159 MW, which the Coal Ministry says it may not be able to provide. crackcrack
