Maruti Suzuki India Ltd plans to launch a small SUV to tap other growing segments in the domestic car market. It is considering a vehicle on the lines of the ‘Suzuki Jimny' a two-door petrol engine SUV sold in Japan but will go for a diesel-powered four-door version for the home market.
The company aims to launch seven new models in the next two years. This includes a new small-car in the Alto segment, mostly developed by its local R&D team, and a “Toyota Innova-type” MPV possibly based on the RIII concept. In 2011, Maruti will also launch the Kizashi sedan (in January), the SX4 diesel variant (around February), followed by the new Swift (March-April) and the Swift Dzire models.
The company currently sells two SUVs, the Grand Vitara and the Gypsy, both petrol models with low sales. MSIL could also leverage parent company Suzuki's tie-up with Volkswagen for new diesel power plants. The SUV segment, which is dominated by diesel models such as the Tata Safari, the Mahindra Scorpio, Toyota's Innova and Fortuner, and the Ford Endeavour, has grown around 70 per cent this year. While both the Kizashi and the small SUV would be new segment entrants, the Ritz platform-based RIII MPV will create a new product vertical. The Swift and Swift Dzire model refreshments will strengthen MSIL's position in a segment where it is already the No 1 player.crackcrack
