21 Nov 2011 Evaluate

Dr Reddy's Laboratories have announced that the agitating workers at its manufacturing facility in Srikakulam, Andhra Pradesh, have called off 3-month old strike and the plant has resumed normal operations. Further to successful discussions between the company's management and the contract workers, facilitated by and in the presence of district administration officials, an understanding has been reached to engage contract workers as per the shift requirement. As per the understanding, the company is now willing to take 180 contract workers into job and may increase the number based on requirement. The company had earlier reduced the number to 85 contract workers. The company has agreed to increase the daily wage to Rs 260 from the Rs 213. This arrangement will be in place for a period of two years.

Around 400 contract labour affiliated to CITU at the second largest drug makers USFDA certified plant were on strike for the past three months demanding regularisation of jobs and wage hike. On 8 November, the contract workers had agreed to call off the strike that began in August. On November 14, they started the agitation once again citing the lack of clarity on the number of contract workers who would be employed by the company.
