Neyveli Lignite to add 75 MW more to solve power shortage problem

In a bid to resolve the acute power shortage faced by Tamil Nadu, State-run Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) is planning to augment 75 MW more through wind and solar energy. The company is aiming to achieve this during the financial year 2012-13.

The company had surpassed the production target during the period 2011-12. The total lignite production was 245.912 lakh tonne during April-March 2011-12 as against the target of 239.50 lakh tonne, up by 6.25%.

The power exports during 2011-12 also touched 15,810.27 million units as against the target of 15,276 million units. Total power generation from all thermal stations put together at 18,788.59 million units (MU) and Thermal Power Station II at 11,087.36 MU achieved during the year are the highest for any year since inception.

Neyveli Lignite Corporation is engaged in the business of lignite mining and power generation. At present, the company has four opencast lignite mines with a capacity of about 30.60 million tonnes per annum, while it can produce about 2,740 MW of power from four power plants.
