GAIL likely to supply gas to Bandel Thermal Station

22 Jul 2011 Evaluate

Bengal's power generation utility is in talks with GAIL for sourcing gas for its proposed peaking power station at Bandel Thermal Power Station. This power station will be operative to meet demand during a surge and is generally kept idle when consumption is low.

GAIL is offering gas at around $16 per mmbtu, it is very costly and cannot be used to set up a base load power station - a power generating unit that is used to generate throughout the day. The only possibility therefore is to set up a peaking power station and the old units at the Bandel Thermal Power plant could be scrapped to make space for the new gas-based unit.

The Bandel Thermal Power station consists of four 80 MWw units that were set up during 1956 and 66 and they have outlived their normal useful life. While Boilers were supplied by B&W, USA, the Turbines were sourced from Westinghouse, USA. Although these units are still running, they will eventually have to be scrapped and that space can be used to set up new power plants.
