Supreme Court of India suspends SMIORE’s mining operations at Karnataka

Sandur Manganese & Iron Ores (SMIORE)’s mining operations in the entire Bellary, district of Karnataka have been suspended by the Supreme Court of India vide its order dated July 29, 2011. The company’s mining operations in the entire Bellary, district of Karnataka are now expected to resume upon the Supreme Court of India’s further order.

The company has reported that though there have been no illegalities / violations on the part of the company and despite the Central Empowered Committee constituted by Supreme Court recommending for continuation of the company’s operations along with the operations of public sector undertaking - National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC), the  Supreme Court taking a holistic view pertaining to protection of environment, conservation of forests and to preserve the ecological balance of the region has suspended all mining operations in the Bellary districts of Karnataka, including the operations of the company.

The major activities of Sandur Manganese & Iron Ores are mining of finest low grade, low phosphorous, manganese and iron ores, facility for production of ferroalloys and management of hydro-electric power generation.
