Tata Motors has ruled out possibility of manufacturing Jaguar and Land Rover (JLR) models in India in the near future, as taxes make its assembly costlier here than the imports. It is building a plant in China which will export these cars to different parts of the world and has also been invited by Saudi Arabia.
In order to justify the investment that Tata Motors has to make, JLR’s sale should be around 4,000-5,000 a year as against the present sale of about 1,000 cars. Due to some taxes that have been imposed on companies like Tata, assembling here is turning out to be more costly than importing the cars.
