Jain Irrigation, the world's second largest manufacturer of drip irrigation systems, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Rwandan Government in Africa for developing irrigation solutions for local farmers and has already started work on one project.
Especially in the context of small and marginal farmers, the company feels that there is a huge synergy between the farming systems in India and countries in Africa and it can offer value-addition to the irrigation systems in these countries. The firm already has presence in 125 countries with manufacturing base in nine countries and is in talks with several other African countries to develop similar partnerships.
Over the last five to seven years, the micro-irrigation system (MIS) business of the company has been clocking a 40 percent compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) and the company expects that the MIS business will grow by around 30 percent this fiscal.
Jain Irrigation has been working closely with small and marginal farmers in India by helping them bringing more land under cultivation with less water by using MIS. It is looking at adding 300,000 hectares per year in India with their average installations cover around one hectare.
The company has reported a fall of 6.89% in its net profit of Rs 109.26 crore for the quarter ended March 31, 2011 as compared to Rs 117.34 crore for the quarter ended March 31, 2010. Total income has jumped 28.30% to Rs 1236.21 crore for the quarter ended March 31, 2011 where as the same was at Rs 963.53 crore for the quarter ended March 31, 2010.
For the year ended March 31, 2011, the company’s net profit rose 8.76% to Rs 295.01 crore as compared to Rs 271.25 crore for the year ended March 31, 2010. Total income of the company rose by 21.80% to Rs 3340.40 crore for the year ended March 31, 2011 from Rs 2742.46 crore for the year ended March 31, 2010.
Jain Irrigation is a diversified company with a market capitalization of Rs 7,500 crore approx. Jain’s product portfolio includes Irrigation Products, Piping Products, Plastic Sheets, Dehydrated Foods, Fruit Puree and Juice concentrates. It also has a growing presence in the renewable energy segment and is the largest player in applications of solar energy in agriculture and rural areas.
