Sterlite Industries’ workers appeal TN Govt for reopening plant

Sterlite Industries’ workers have appealed to the Tamil Nadu Government in order to facilitate reopening of its copper smelter unit, which was shut down in the wake of alleged leak of noxious gas. The Vedanta group company got order from Divisional Engineer of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, for the closure of the unit in Tuticorin employing around 700 workers. On March 30, 2013, the plant halted its operations after alleged gas leak that caused mild suffocation, sore throat and eye irritation to several people in the locality.

The company has reported 22.23% fall in its net profit at Rs 541.84 crore for for third quarter ended December 31, 2012 as compared to Rs 696.75 crore for the same quarter in the previous year. However, total income of the company has decreased by 1.79% at Rs 5314.83 crore for quarter under review as compared to Rs 5411.98 crore for the quarter ended December 31, 2011.
