Ambuja Cements, in which Swiss major Holcim holds majority stake, reported a 6.57% dip in May sales at 17.64 lakh tones as compared to the same month last year. The company had recorded 18.88 lakh tones sales in May 2010.

Cumulative sales of the company during the January-May period, however, were up by 1.77% to 93.32 lakh tones against 91.70 lakh tones during the corresponding period a year ago.

The cement production of the company also declined during the reporting month at 17.36 lakh tones against 19.04 lakh tones in May last year. Production decreased to 91.38 lakh tones, compared to 91.48 lakh tones in January-may period of last year.

Ambuja Cements reported a decline of 11.84% at Rs 407.48 crore in its net profit for the quarter ended March 31, 2011 against Rs 462.19 crore for the quarter ended March 31, 2010. However, total income of the company increased by 11.24% at Rs 2274.56 crore for the quarter ended March 31, 2011 against Rs 2044.74 crore for the quarter ended March 31, 2010.
