Sterlite Industries' copper smelter facing another problem in reopening from a two-month shutdown as a local authority lodged an appeal with the Supreme Court seeking to keep it closed. The smelter produces 30,000 tonnes of refined copper, closer of which has squeezed domestic copper supplies and boosted imports.

Earlier, the local pollution board in Tamil Nadu ordered the smelter to shut at the end of March after complaints of emissions, has now taken its case to the Supreme Court. But on May 31, a fast-track environmental court had given permission to resume operations overseen by a court-appointed panel.
