Neyveli Lignite to commission wind power project in Tamil Nadu by June 2014

Neyveli Lignite (NLC) is all set to foray into the renewable energy sector through commissioning its wind power project in Tamil Nadu by June next year. The company is planning to set up a 51-MW wind power farm at Kaluneerkulam in Tamil Nadu.

Further, the company is in the process of setting up two power projects in Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh at an estimated cost of Rs 24,770 crore, to take its capacity to 11,195 MW.

Meanwhile, NLC is examining 89 proposals from Indonesia, Australia, Mozambique, the US and a few other countries offering coal assets and long-term fuel supplies among other things for its upcoming power projects. The company is likely to take a final call on these by November.

Neyveli Lignite Corporation is engaged in the business of lignite mining and power generation. At present, the company has four opencast lignite mines with a capacity of about 30.60 million tonnes per annum, while it can produce about 2,740 MW of power from four power plants. It is one of the best public sector units in the country and a best profit making company in the past 16 years.
