30 Nov 2011 Evaluate

Hindustan Unilever (HUL), in an effort to fight against the shrinking margins has hiked the retail prices of premium bathing soaps by 2.6-5.5%. The price of 90 gm pink and white Lux soap has been raised by Rs 1 to Rs 19 while the prices of 45 gm and 75 gm packs of Dove soap have also been hiked by Rs 1 to Rs 19 and Rs 39 respectively.

The company has also increased the 100 gm and 150 gm packs of Rexona soap by Re 1, which now retail at Rs 19 and Rs 32, respectively. The company has also raised the price of the 100 gm pack of Hamam soap, which now retails for Rs 19.

This price hike will help HUL protect its margin. While palm oil prices have stabilised, rupee depreciation has hit the company, warranting a price hike.

Recently, HUL board had approved a proposal for entering into a strategic alliance with Tata Teleservices and Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) for distribution of latter’s telecom products by leveraging company’s distribution network in rural markets in India.

The company’s net profit for the quarter ended September 30, 2011 registered growth of 21.69% at Rs 688.92 crore as compared to Rs 566.12 crore for the corresponding quarter of the previous year. The company’s total income has increased by 17.48% at Rs 5688.15 crore for the second quarter of the current fiscal from Rs 4841.49 crore for the similar quarter of the previous year.
