Tata Nano entered Sri Lanka's taxi market, billed as more comfortable and safer alternative to rickety three-wheel auto rickshaws. It is launching its service with 45 cabs and plans to increase the fleet to 200 within six months.
Sri Lanka became Nano’s first foreign market late last month. Nano service is pitched at a lower price than air-conditioned cabs and as a better alternative to ubiquitous three-wheel taxis. Two weeks ago Nano was launched in Sri Lanka but it costs Rs 925,000 ($8,500), compared to about $3,000 for a basic model in India. The Tata Nano generated world-wide interest when it was launched in 2008, and the company said that plans for further international sales were now in place.
Besides, Tata Motors and Japan-based New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) inaugurated an environment-friendly dual-fuel based power generation facility at Tata Motors' Pune plant. The aim of the project is to produce power through clean environment technology.
