Tata Power: Quarterly Result update - 11 Aug 2021

Tata Power | Market Cap Rs. 42,194 Cr

CMP 132 | PB 1.8x FY22

Recommendation | Sell Partially

Results: Tata Power reported 54% increase in sales and 12% growth in operating profit year on year. The sale numbe is not comparable due to Odisha DISCOMS acquisition & higher execution of projects in TPSSL partially offset by lower generation in CGPL.

Click here for 10 year X-ray

(Tata Power is a large conglomerate with business ranging from power generation, coal, shipping, contractor. 10 Yr X-Ray doesn't reflect its financials fully)

Key highlights:

  • Transmission & Distribution segment grew 95% year on year to Rs. 6,309 Cr. This is the most profitable business and forms highest value in overall valuation.
  • Company incurred losses at Odisha Discoms on impact of Covid 2nd  wave and cyclone, but it was partly offset  by lower than expected UMPP losses Rs. 150 Cr (vs Rs. 270 Cr in Q4FY21) despite of higher coal prices and higher renewable profits
  • The company completed acquisition of 51% equity in TP Northern Odisha discom (NESCO) taking total customer base to 12.1 mn.
  • Solar EPC (TPSL) clocked order inflows of Rs 740 Cr (205MW) taking the Order Book to Rs. 726 Cr (2.2GW) with execution over 12-18 months and has emerged as the lowest bidder for 800MW.
  • Company is looking to bid for transmission projects under Tata Projects.

Outlook: Solar EPC segment working capital debt spiked on Rs. 200 Cr in during the quarter on mismatch in payment schedules vs. module procurement. As per the management, this will even out as customer payments come in. The EPC working capital debt remains a key monitorable given that this is typically a negative working capital business.

The company had received an in-principal approval to form the InvIT in July’20 and was in advanced stages of due diligence as per the 3QFY21 earnings commentary. Hiving of renewable debt (~Rs.1170 Cr – 27% of net debt as on Mar’20) via InvIT was the key catalyst for the company to achieve its net debt target of Rs 25,000 Cr by FY22. There is still no clarity on timeline which may limit upside in medium term

MoneyWorks4me Opinion: We had recommended Tata Power at ~56/share. Tata Power is at the cusp of turnaround with sharp reduction in debt through fund raising and hiving off non-core assets. Besides, with lesser number of players in power sector, few players have balance sheet size to bid for new opportunities in the sector e.g. renewables and distribution utilities of union territories and states.

We believe that the restructuring exercise at Tata Power bodes well for medium term wealth creation for shareholders. While last 5 years have been painful for Tata Power shareholders, we have invested after the company has turned the corner.

We recommended Reduce recently as it had formed larger % of total portfolio. We continue to hold the rest as we see more growth opportunities for Tata Power in discom, renewables and green energy value chain. We find comfort in owning established companies with strong promoter backing to capitalize on new opportunities. It gives us staying power and reduce activity to sell stocks incurring brokerage & taxes unless they have more downside than upside.

Tata Power: Quarterly Result update - 17 May 2021

Tata Power | Market Cap Rs. 32,433 Cr

CMP 102 | PB 1.4x FY22

Recommendation | HOLD

Results: Tata Power reported 53% increase in sales year on year and operating declined 14% in the same period. The sale numbers are not comparable due to the acquisition of Odisha distribution circle.

(Tata Power is a large conglomerate with business ranging from power generation, coal, shipping, contractor. 10 Yr X-Ray doesn't reflect its financials fully)

Key highlights:

  • Transmission & Distribution segment grew 56.5% year on year to Rs. 5,023 Cr. This is the most profitable business and forms highest value in overall valuation.
  • Operating profit declined due to under-recoveries in Mundra from rise in coal prices. However, it will be offset by increased profit margin in coal mining the company owns in Indonesia.
  • Generation business declined 9.6% to Rs. 3,283 Cr over previous year.
  • Net debt was ~Rs. 36,000 Cr from Rs. 43,580 Cr in previous year. Tata Power didn’t achieve net debt level of Rs. 25,000 Cr by FY21 as proposed InvIT transaction was called off.
  • Solar EPC business order book stood at Rs. 8,740 Cr, which is to be executed over the next 12-18 months. . The company targets to enhance its market share in the EPC segment from current 16.5% to 20% over FY20-FY25 and aims to maintain an order book of 3.5GW per annum.
  • Capex for FY22 is estimated to be Rs. 8,000 Cr, of which 50% will be utilised for renewables and Rs. 1,000 Cr for discoms. Capex to be utilised in Odisha discom, Transmission assets in Mumbai, New DISCOMs’ acquisition.

Outlook: Although the InvIT transaction failed in execution, the management thinking of an alternative for monetisation of its renewable assets which may fetch a higher valuation.

The company has repaid Mundra’s debt of Rs. 4,740 Cr in FY21 which led to an interest cost saving of ~Rs. 1,100 Cr for the project. As major part of the repayment happened during Q3FY21, the actual interest cost saving would be reflected in FY22 to the tune of Rs. 3,500 Cr.

Tata Power is on track for divestments from non-core business and reduce burden. Net debt is Rs. 36,000 Cr same as Q2FY21. We expect it to reduce to Rs. 25,000 Cr after monetization of Renewables business.

For the Solar pipeline business, the company expects 10k MW of ordering in next 6 months aided by RPO obligations, expected to kick in once Covid subsides.

Tata Power: Quarterly Result update - 23 Feb 2021

Tata Power | Market Cap Rs. 28,790 Cr

CMP 90 | PB 1.3x FY22

Recommendation | HOLD

Results: Tata Power reported 7.5% increase in sales year on year in Q3FY21 and operating profit growth was flat over the same time period. However, Profit after tax was up 33% before exceptional items due to lower interest costs.

Click here for 10 year X-ray

(Tata Power is a large conglomerate with business ranging from power generation, coal, shipping, contractor. 10 Yr X-Ray doesn't reflect its financials fully)

Key highlights:

  • Transmission & Distribution segment grew 14.2% year on year to Rs. 3,866cr, supported by Renewables segment, which grew 41.2% over previous year to Rs. 1,240cr.
  • Generation business declined 7% to Rs. 3,407 Cr. over previous year.
  • Divestment-related measures and infusion of Rs. 2,600 Cr from the promoters has aided the debt reduction. Net debt was stable at ~Rs. 36,000 Cr from previous quarter and 17% low from previous year.
  • The company is close to finalizing its InvIT and hopes to announce it soon. It would look to transfer 3.4GW of projects to the InvIT, of which 2.7GW are currently operational.
  • Solar EPC business order book grew to Rs. 10,608 Cr, with projects under development in UP, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan, having total solar capacity of 2,689 MW. The company expects its solar EPC order book to be completed over the next 1-2 years.

Outlook: Tata Power is on track for divestments from non-core business and reduce burden. Net debt is Rs. 36,000 Cr same as Q2FY21. We expect it to reduce to Rs. 25,000 Cr after demerger of Renewables InvIT.

Tata Power will be incurring capex of Rs. 4,000-5,000 Cr in renewables. And Rs. 1,000 Cr in distribution and transmission business.

Under its renewable development portfolio, company won 110 MW solar project in Kerala, and is awaiting letter of award for additional projects of 370MW, which will translate to a total portfolio of over 4.4GW. CRISIL has upgraded Tata Power Credit Rating to AA/Stable from AA-/Positive. This will reduce interest outgo for the company.

MoneyWorks4me Opinion: Tata Power is at the cusp of turnaround with sharp reduction in debt through fund raising and hiving off non-core assets. Besides, with lesser number of players in power sector, few players have balance sheet size to bid for new opportunities in the sector eg. renewables and distribution utilities of union territories and states. We believe that the restructuring exercise at Tata Power bodes well for medium term wealth creation for shareholders. While last 5 years have been painful for Tata Power shareholders, we have invested after the company has turned the corner. We expect good returns from our purchase date and purchase price.

Recommendation | BUY

Click here for 10 year X-ray (Tata Power is a large conglomerte with business ranging from power generation, coal, shipping, contractor. 10 Yr X-Ray doesn't reflect its financials fully)

Results: Tata Power reported 8% growth in sales year on year in Q2FY21 and operating profit growth was 15% over same time period.

Key highlights:

  • Standalone business (Mumbai discom) reported 10% decline in sales while Coastal Gujarat (Mundra) plant saw sales growth in double digit.
  • Growth of 8% can be attributed to Orissa Discom acquisition in last quarter.
  • Debt has now reduced to Rs. 36,000 Cr from Rs. 48,000 Cr.  With more divestments from Hydro projects in Zambia and Georgia, Renewables InVit and Tata Projects.

Outlook: Tata Power is on track for divestments from non-core business and reduce burden. It plans to invest Rs. 15,000 Cr in distribution (existing and new), transmission and renewables. Over next 3 years lot of union territory and cities might come up with Discom privatization. Tata Power, along with Torrent Power and Adani Power have ability to run local distribution efficiently. This can open up growth opportunities apart of existing growth opportunity from renewables capacity addition as India aims to shore up its share of renewables in total power generation.

MoneyWorks4me Opinion: Tata Power is at the cusp of turnaround with sharp reduction in debt through fund raising and hiving off non-core assets. Besides, with lesser number of players in power sector, few players have balance sheet size to bid for new opportunities in the sector example renewables and distribution union territory and states. We believe that the restructuring exercise at Tata Power bodes well for medium term wealth creation for shareholders. While last 5 years have been painful for Tata Power shareholders, we have invested after the company has turned the corner. We expect good returns from our purchase date and purchase price.
